What is the Segment Anything Model (SAM)?

SAM is an open-source AI model from Meta AI, designed to segment (identify and isolate) any object in any image given a prompt — in this case, a click. ViT-Base is the smallest and fastest variant (~90 MB), making it practical for browser-based use.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The SAM model runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your image never leaves your device. The ~90 MB model downloads once on first use and is cached permanently.

Can I select multiple objects?

Each click adds a new foreground point to the current selection, which refines the mask around a single object. To select a different object entirely, click "Clear selection" and click on the new object.

Why does the first use take a while?

The SAM ViT-Base model (~90 MB) downloads once on first use and is permanently cached in your browser. Subsequent uses load instantly from the cache — even on different images.

What file format is the downloaded cutout?

The cutout is exported as a PNG with a transparent background (alpha channel). You can paste it into any design tool, website, or presentation that supports transparent images.

How it works

1Upload any photo using the drop zone or the file browser. JPG, PNG and WebP are supported up to 20 MB.
2Click "Analyze Image". On your first use the SAM ViT-Base model (~90 MB) downloads once and is permanently cached in your browser. After that, image analysis takes a few seconds.
3Once the image is ready, click directly on the object you want to select. The AI segments the object and draws a colored mask over it. Click multiple times to refine the selection and add more foreground points.
4When you are happy with the selection, click "Download cutout" to save the selected object as a transparent PNG. The background outside the mask becomes fully transparent.
