What AI model does this use?

This tool uses BRIA RMBG-1.4, an open-source background matting model by BRIA AI. It runs via the @huggingface/transformers library (transformers.js) directly in your browser using ONNX Runtime Web.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The model downloads once to your browser, then all processing happens locally using WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device.

How does this differ from the other background remover?

The other tool (/tools/remove-bg) uses @imgly/background-removal with a smaller model (~20 MB). This tool uses BRIA RMBG-1.4 (~44 MB), which typically produces sharper edges, especially on complex subjects like hair and fur.

What images work best?

Portraits, product photos, animals, and objects against contrasting backgrounds all work well. Transparent or reflective objects (glass, mirrors) are more challenging.

Why does it take time on first use?

The neural network model (~44 MB) downloads once on first use. After that it is cached in your browser and every subsequent use is instant, even on new photos.
